If Clause in Past Perfect Tense
The general form is If + past perfect + would have + past participle:
In this type of conditional sentences, the verb in the 'If' clause is in the Past Perfect tense; the verb in the main clause is in the perfect conditional. The condition cannot be fulfilled because the action in the if clause didn't happen. e. g.
(a) If he had come to me, I would have helped him. (But he didn't come to me)
